Greetings and Salutations!
I have decided to make this post after noticing how many servers are tagged as 'Roleplay' but are not actually a 'Roleplay' server, Instead they are RPG servers. There are a few differences, some small some large.
ATTENTION; IF YOUR SERVER IS NOT A 'STRICT ROLEPLAY' SERVER, PLESE LABEL IT AS 'RPG', NOT UNDER ROLEPLAY, THIS IS TO PREVENT CONFUSION FOR USERS AND POTENTIAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS.
First, Lets give a definition to Role Play.
As taken from Wikipedia;
A role-playing game is a game in which the participants Arseume the roles of characters and collaboratively create stories. Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, they may improvise freely; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the games.
You might be thinking, 'Whats the difference? Both types have the player take on a role of their own, and the player can decide what their character does. What's all the hullabaloo?'
So I'll explain. I'll try and keep it short and sweet.
1. Control
'Strict Roleplay'; Allows the player to create their own player completely and fully, they made a background story and when in the game they immerse themselves completely into the role they have created, All Strict RolePlay servers use two terms to refer to chat and interaction on their servers and forums. These are, OOC and IC, OOC stands for 'Out Of Character' and as the name suggests this is when the player leaves their role and speaks as a normal person, this is frowned upon if not forbidden in all Strict RolePlay servers. IC stands for 'In Character' Obviously this is when the player is taking in the role of their character and acting, speaking, and doing everything that their character would do without any OOC/Outside influence. The players have total control over a world that they play in, they can control the economy, the government, and most events that take place.
'RPG' Games and Minecraft servers provide a themed atmosphere to play in and (most of the time) allows players to create their own characters but rarely promote background. RPGs focus mainly on stats and loot grinding when Strict RolePlay is based off your characters skill and your own RP (Roleplay) abilities. There is limited control over the world in a RPG but players are not enforced to play IC instead almost everything in game is done Out Of Character. The economy is usually controlled by staff or by automated plugins further limiting the control of the game.
2. Immersion
Strict RP servers allow the characters to decide the fate of the land, this means that the Player must be completely immersed into their characters and what they would do. The players are surrounded by other people also playing as characters and OOC Chat is limited providing a better immersion and gameplay.
RPG games also create a great environment for the players to play in but without IC chat, OOC is rampant and a bit distracting from the theme. RPG games are immersive but a chain is on,y as strong as its weakest link and a game filled with numbers and stats, not to mention the n00bspeekerz, is a very weak link when it comes to immersion.
Don't take this as a bashing on RPG servers, Every server has the ability to be great but in this case community is everything.
A bunch of this is my personal (experienced) opinion and I don't expect you to agree with everything I have said, But that is not what this thread was for. This thread was to distinguish the differences between RP Servers and RPG Servers.
TL;DR?
Strict Role-play is very 'strict' in is rules and guidelines and tend to be more immersive. They enforce the players to stay in character but there is an OOC chat if it is needed, You need to apply for these types of servers.
RPG servers provide a themed environment for players to interact with but is more OOC (Out Of Character) based and do not enforce such strict rules.
I hope this helped you. I look forward to seeing some of your servers and plan to check some out!
